SHARE WITH JILL THE EARLY BEGINNINGS IN
"THE LIFE OF A PARROTLET"
Proud Parents: Jane and Quasi
The proud owner is Jill Harrison, California, who graciously supplied us with all these pictures and the story so we could follow along and share what a breeder  lovingly performs for pet owners. We will follow these little chicks from hatchling to fully feathered.
The Story Begins
Whenever I go into check on my birds mom and dad come out of the nest to yell at me.  It is funny, if anyone else enters the room they dive into the nest box and hide.  I have to be careful not to stay in there too long.  I go in and feed them and change the water every morning and evening and pretty much stay out of there the rest of the time.  I remove the broken egg shells when I check the nest if Jane has not done it already.  Sometimes she removes the
shells.  Nice of my hen to vacate the nest so that I can do that and check on the chicks isn't it?
Both of the parents were still hand feeding when I purchased them, so they really have no fear of me.  I have to be careful when feeding and checking on the babies..... they do not hesitate to try to rip me to shreds.  I put all of their food dishes on the opposite end of the cage from their nest.  This cage came with a divider, so I just put the divider in, change the food without fear of attack, then remove the divider when I am done.
The first chick hatched Friday evening, and I took the picture Saturday morning.  The second chick hatched early Sunday morning and I took the picture several hours later.

I am just facinated by the whole process of breeding these little gems.  I would be happy to keep sending in pictures if ya'll are interested.
Our first egg was laid on January 11th and continued every other day until January 25th.  So we should have a new hatchling tomorrow.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION"
Quasi is the dad.... he is approximately 2 1/2 years old.  I have had Background on him since October 1999 when he was about 5 weeks old.  Quasi was my first male parrotlet, my second ever (I purchased Esmeralda about 2 weeks earlier).  I don't remember the exact date but we did have an earthquake early that morning out in the desert. He is very devoted to Jane and protects her and their home.  He announces intruders to their room by ringing the bell on one of their toys.  Once out of the cage however he will lift his feathers for a good scratch and step up just like a gentleman.
Jane is just over 2 years old.  I have had her since January 2000 when she was about 6 weeks old.  I was giving her 1 handfeeding a day when I first got her.  When she was about 2 months old she started attacking me whenever she was out of her cage.  I would put her on the play gym and she would lift her wings and make a b-line for my bare arm or whatever limb was closest.  We called her vicious attack bird for a long time. She will eat hulled sunflower seeds from my fingers through the cage bars and this is the ONLY time she will not try to bite me.  Other than that Jane has turned out to be a very good momma.
This will be Quasi and Jane's 4th clutch ever.
I originally had different mates for the two of them.  Unfortunately I found Tarzan at the bottom of the cage dead one day when they were about 6 months old.  I guess Jane didn't like him (I didn't know at that time that I should have had them separated.)  Since Quasi and Jane obviously showed interest in each other I gave them a nest box in January of last
year and they immediately began their first clutch.  We had 7 eggs and 7 babies from their first clutch.. a total of 15 chicks last year.

Jill found a surprise when she got home. A new little chick had arrived. LOOK!   very carefully and you will see the egg tooth is still attached.
I think we should name this one "Paige" as she was born
on the same day as this page.   :-)

We had a new baby hatch overnight.  I took piicture on left at 7am this morning and picture on right at about 8pm tonight.  Isn't it amazing the difference between the oldest and youngest chick after only a few days?  They grow so fast.
